Best Drinks for the Sauna

What to drink before, during, and after a sauna session, from plain water to tea and other simple non-alcoholic options.

Water, tea, and a berry drink in a sauna

Staying comfortable during a sauna session includes drinking regularly.

Plain water is the simplest and most universal choice. Tea or another light non-alcoholic drink can also be pleasant, especially while relaxing afterward.

Water Is the Main Sauna-Day Drink

Plain water works well for almost any sauna routine. It is usually more comfortable to drink smaller amounts:

  • Before the first round
  • Between rounds
  • After the session

You do not need to drink a large amount all at once. Drink gradually and pay attention to thirst and how you feel.

Tea After the Sauna

Warm tea can be a pleasant choice during the rest period after the sauna. Options include:

  • Herbal tea
  • Ivan tea
  • Regular black or green tea
  • Mint tea
  • Tea with berries or other natural flavoring

Try not to make the drink excessively sweet.

Cool Drinks

Some people prefer cool water or lightly chilled drinks between rounds. Choose a comfortable temperature; there is no need to drink ice-cold water immediately after a very hot steam room.

Berry Drinks

An unsweetened or moderately sweet berry drink can be a pleasant option after the sauna. For packaged drinks, check the amount of added sugar.

What to Limit

For a sauna day, it is usually better to limit:

  • Alcohol
  • Very sugary soft drinks
  • Large amounts of energy drinks
  • Beverages that leave you feeling heavy or uncomfortable

Simple drinks are usually the easiest choice around sauna heat.

When to Drink

Before

Have some water in advance, especially if you have not had anything to drink for a while.

During

Drink small amounts between rounds.

After

Continue drinking water while you cool down and rest.

Do You Need to Drink a Huge Amount?

There is no need to force yourself to drink a very large amount in a short period. Drink regularly and follow your thirst. If you feel significant weakness, dizziness, nausea, or other strong discomfort, stop the session and rest.

A Simple Sauna Drink Setup

  • Plain water
  • A thermos of tea
  • An unsweetened or moderately sweet berry drink
  • An extra bottle of water for afterward

That is enough for many ordinary sauna sessions.
